SPIRITUAL EXERCISES

I Timothy 4:8 NKJV
"For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable
for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of
that which is to come."
The awareness of the importance of physical exercises is far
much more than we had in time past. This may be largely due
to the fact that more and more people are now able to afford
automobiles of different sorts, such that physical exercises
such as walking, trekking, and general day to day physical
movement has gradually gone out of our daily routine. As a
result, gymnasia have become very popular. And in the gym
you are made to engage in repetitive actions that will end up
toning your muscles and improve your heart's health.
To be involved in Spiritual exercise is to engage in some
repetitive spiritual activities that tone your spiritual muscles.
This will in no doubt make you spiritually fit, both in your
spirit and in your heart. Paul refers to it as godliness. You can
exercise yourself into godliness. Godliness is that act of
becoming more like God. The more spiritually fit you are the
more like God you become. The negative character and
tendencies that you notice in your life are all signs to show
and prove that you need some exercise. When people climb
stairs and find themselves breathing so hard, they conclude
that they are no longer so fit anymore. The hard breathing
indicates that your heart needs some exercises.
It is no different in spiritual matters. You will have to engage
your spirit and your heart in some repetitive spiritual activities
in order to be spiritually fit. Some of these activities include:
-Daily and regular praying. Luke 18:1
-Daily study of the word-Psalm 1:1-3
-Praise and worship of God-Psalm 119:164.
-Fasting-Matthew 6:16.
-Exhorting one another- 1Timothy 4:13
-Winning souls to God-Mark 16:20.
These exercises will keep you spiritually fit, they will increase
your godliness, they will empower you to handle any kind of
spiritual challenge, and above all they will keep you fit for
eternal life, which is heaven.
Assignment/Prayer
i. Come up with a plan on how you will engage these spiritual
activities in your life on a daily basis.
ii. Ask God to breath into your plan for these exercises.
